British Officers WWI Cuff Rank Tunic – Royal Engineers – Item 88112
XRare pattern regimentally important British Officers cuff rank tunic attributed to Col. Rookes Evelyn Bell Crompton R.E. Lightweight summer denim material tunic in good overall condition. Bronzed Officers collar badges and tunic buttons. Cuff rank for Colonel. Above the breast pocket is his original medal ribbons for the Order of Bath, Crimea Medal and Boer War Queens South Africa medal. Crompton was a British electrical engineer industrialist and inventor. The company he formed Crompton & Co was one of the first worlds large scale manufacturers of electrical systems. He served in the Crimean War in 1854 and was so interested in the event that in 1856 he travelled to the Crimea on HMS Dragon and visited his brother in what was the front line. Due to his travel he made a claim for the Crimea medal with clasp Sebastopol. When the Royal Engineers Electrical volunteers were formed in 1897 Crompton became the Commanding Officers and served in the Boer War and became heavily involved in the use of search lights during combat due to the high percentage of night time attacks. He as mentioned in despatches for his service in the Boer War and was also made Companion of the Order of Bath. He was appointed honorary Colonel of the London Electrical Engineers and the 27th London Electrical Engineers RE. This tunic was formally part of the Barry Morris collection and was exhibited in his museum in North Yorkshire.
