WWI German POW Isle of Man Carving – Item 92824
Excellent quality German prisoner of war WWI period carved cow bone. Dated 1916 and shows the famous camp on the Isle of Man with carving of camp surroundings plus two interesting mother of pearl small panels associated with this. Measures 10cm in height and 11cm wide approx. This famous camp on the Isle of Man held WWI prisoners throughout the war. There is now a museum on the island to this camp. These carvings were made and used to exchange for goods with guards. Still has label attached detailing “made by German prisoner on the Isle of Man”.
Note: Knockaloe Internment Camp was a WWI internment camp on the Isle of Man, at Knockaloe Farm near Patrick, Isle of Man, near Peel, which housed 23,000 prisoners-of-war and 3,000 guards between 1914 and 1919. It was served by the Knockaloe railway station and branch line
